As a rural business owner and county resident, I have submitted the following letter to Peterborough County Council. This topic is going to be discussed at council on Oct. 17. 2012. It would be helpful to know your thoughts on this subject and and also gauge the public’s desire to change the municipality names.
If you need more information, here is a link to an article written in the Peterborough Examiner: County warden meets with Canada Post over plan to eliminate rural route addresses in mid-November
Thanks in advance for your comments.
To: Warden of Peterborough and County Councillor Members
My name is Cora Whittington and I own Golden Pathways Retreat and B&B and I am a leadership coach and strategic facilitator.
The re-naming of the rural addresses of the County of Peterborough has me concerned.
This has been my best year ever in the B&B and many people come because I am just outside of Peterborough and because of the SEO optimization that I have done with the word “Peterborough”. If they thought I was in another municipality would they come? Also I dread the thought of spelling Otonabee-South-Monaghan each time.
Having said all that, I do believe that this is a done deal because my sister lives in Western Ontario and her address changed a year ago, so I doubt that Canada Post will go back on its focus as it moves across the province.
At the same time this is an opportunity for the County and the municipalities to look at some long term strategy and branding.
When the municipalities named themselves after amalgamation it was easiest to hyphenate the names. It didn’t really matter because it only showed up on licences and internal paperwork. There was no need to consider practically, spelling ease and branding.
With this announcement, that has all changed. If we consider that in the future the rural areas will be the “burbs” of Peterborough – like Markham, Scarborough, Etobicoke etc is to Toronto then we need to take the opportunity to rethink the names.
The criteria for new names could include
- One word
- Easy to Spell
Unfortunately, we are all going to need to spend a lot of money on this so let’s take advantage of the opportunity. Change is always difficult but I believe that people are really ready to simplify the municipality names.
Perhaps Canada Post can be approached to delay their implementation until the municipality and county re-branding process is complete.
Thank you for your consideration of these ideas.
